Hitler sent his air force (known as the Luftwaffe) to attack British ships, airfields and factories. From July to October 1940, there were regular air raids over Britain, and Britain fought back in the skies. Planes fought each other in the air, and this became known as the ‘Battle of Britain’. People on the ground often saw these battles take place, which are called ‘dogfights’.
